Reader’s Question:

I would like to know if you are required to have car insurance in Brooklyn, New York if you only have provisional license.

James

Brooklyn, NY

If you are a teen who lives with your parents, typically car insurance carriers would want your parents to notify them once their children obtain their learners permit, provisional license or full license. It will depend upon your insurance carrier’s guidelines if you are required at this point to get car insurance so you can be properly covered.

Some insurance carriers I know do not charge any extra to car insurance policy with just a permit and most insurance provider will. I suggest that you contact your parent;scar insurance provider and ask them if you are required to be listed on your parent’s car insurance policy with a provisional license.

Your parent’s car insurance policy rate in New York would definitely go up if a teenager is added to the policy. You may ask the car insurance agent if there are any discounts that you may take advantage of like good student discount or driver education class that you can take to help lower the car insurance rate of your parents. Always remember to obey traffic laws so you may become a fully licensed motorist and of course to avoid having expensive car insurance rate.

Reader’s Question:

Will a traffic ticket violation be reflected on my driving record with just a learner’s permit or provisional license inĀ  New York?

Jim

Hempstead, NY

An individual with a junior permit, privileges or license will have their license be suspended for sixty days if they are convicted of a serious traffic violation or 2 other violations within the first 6 months after receiving their license or privileges back following a revocation or suspension while holding a junior license or permit.

You will need to contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicle to find out for sure how they keep their driving histories. They will inform you how any violations convictions received during the period you had your provisional license or learner’s permit in Hempstead NY are placed on your MVR, how long the violations will stay on your driving record and if points will be assigned to it.
