What Is The Minimum Auto Insurance Needed in New York?
Reader’s Question:
I would like to know what is the minimum insurance that I should have for my car. Is it okay to get just the minimum or should I buy more insurance? This is Chris from Buffalo, New York.
Chris
Buffalo, NY
Hey Chris. If you want to drive legally in Buffalo, New York, you will need to have liability insurance with the following minimum amounts of coverage: $10000 for property damage, a minimum of $25000 and maximum of $50000 for injury and a minimum of $50000 for death with a maximum of $100000. Your coverage for liability has to remain in effect even if the vehicle is not used as long as the registration is valid. Now, as to your question on getting more coverage, this would be dependent upon several factors as well. First of all, you will have to decide up to how much can you pay for your insurance. Second, take into consideration your ability to pay out of your own pocket if ever something happens that is not covered by your insurance?
Next think about the value of your car both to your lifestyle and as an asset in your personal finance books. Now, decide whether it is more practical for you to pay a higher premium for more coverage, then get more insurance. Generally you would do this if your car is relatively new, or too costly to repair on your own. Otherwise, it may be better to just keep a little more in your bank account to tide you over if you do have to pay out of your own pocket should anything happen.

Teen Car Insurance in New York – Can I Afford It?
Reader’s Question:
I’m a parent worried about how much I’m going to pay for my newly licensed teen. How can I be able to save money on my daughter’s insurance here in New York?
Belle
Buffalo, NY
Saving money on teen car insurance in New York may not be so easy. You are not alone as thousands upon thousands of parents go through this every year. The high premiums of teen drivers can be well over a thousand dollars and it is sometimes hard to drive those premiums down.
Even if you can’t lower your car insurance premiums, you can prevent them from going up by making sure your young driver is really ready to drive. If they have no accidents in the “sensitive” period between the ages of 16 and 21, the premiums you pay will go down year after year.
You can make your daughter a better driver by setting a good example and being a responsible driver yourself. If all else fails, there are some tips that can slash a bit of the high premiums of teenage car insurance policies.
First is that you have to avoid buying your new driver a large SUV or a sports car as the premiums on these vehicles are very high due to their large size and high top speeds. Then ask for your teen to pay for some of the fees. Your daughter will most likely not be able to pay all of the costs but she can help. You also have to help your student get good grades as students with a 3.0 GPA actually get discounts, up to 10 percent in some cases.
You have to follow these guidelines and you would save a little bit of money. Paying for your daughter’s car insurance is one of the many expenses that a lot of parents dread but have no fear because once they turn 21 the premiums drop considerably.
Penalty For Lapse New York State Car Insurance?
Reader’s Question:
What are the penalties for insurance lapse in the New York state?
Polly
Buffalo, NY
Anytime that your car is registered but not insured in NYS it can cause a lapse in your auto insurance coverage and suspension of your driver’ license. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles should notify you once they are aware of a lapse in your car insurance by a letter. This letter will give you instructions on how you need to show proof that you have insurance or sold the car. If you cannot prove this, you will need to surrender your vehicle’s license plates to the NYS DMV and get a receipt when you do so.
You may not be required to surrender your vehicle’s license plates for a lapse of 90 days or shorter if you pay a civil penalty fine. There is a sure way in which to calculate what the fine will be so I suggest you contact the DMV. If the the auto insurance lapse exceeds 90 days your driver license will be suspended. they will suspend your registration and driver license indefinitely if you do not surrender your plates to the DMV . To have your driver license reinstated you must pay a fee of $25 when the suspension ends.
