Reader’s Question:

Hi. I would like to know how much will a speeding ticket affect my car insurance rate?

Kelly

Buffalo, NY

If this is your first ticket, it is possible that you will not see any change with your car insurance premium. However, there are other factors that is being considered so it is difficult to say.

States vary regarding car insurance laws. Typically insurance companies are not allowed to increase your car insurance rates after just one speeding ticket.

Different insurers have different guidelines regarding to raising car insurance rate. Some insurers will consider the severity of your citation and increase your premium accordingly. Also, some insurance companies will raise rates after a specific amount per violation.

Since there are various factors being considered , on the average the increase would be $50 more a year.

If you have discount on your car insurance, it is possible that that single ticket can remove the discount and may increase your base rate by two percent.

Reader’s Question:

I received a seat belt violation in Yonkers NY and I would like to know if this may cause for my auto insurance to go up? I also heard that this violation may take off my insurance discount, is this true? I live in a New York state.

Denver

Yonkers, NY

If this seat belt offense is your first and only minor moving violation in New York State then it should not cause a surcharge to be added to your car insurance policy.

If you already have other traffic violations on your NY driving record then an infraction of this seat belt violation could cause your insurance rates in Yonkers NY to rise but if this is your first minor moving violation then a surcharge would not be charged and therefore your premiums would not be raised due to only this citation.

Your insurance company may take off a safe driver discount, etc for a traffic violation though so you should check with your insurance agent or company for information on your insurance company’s rating system.

Auto Insurance Rate Increase After New York Speeding Ticket?

Reader’s Question:

I live in New York, NY. My friend got a speeding ticket while driving my car, which is covered under my father’s insurance. Will his rates go up, or only my friend’s insurance rates? will he ever find out that a speeding violation was made in his car in New York?

Bob

New York, NY

Speeding tickets are normally written to a person, the driver of the car, and not the vehicle. Due to how the citation is written in New York, your friend will be the one that should show the conviction for the speeding violation in his driving record.

Once your friend pays the ticket the infraction should appear on his driving record New York and thus his insurance rates (not your father’s) could be affected depending upon his insurance company’s rating system. If your friend takes care of the ticket properly it is doubtful that your father would find out about the speeding ticket that someone received in his car. You can verify with the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles to make sure.
